Hearing the final sound in a word helps a beginning reader spell, blend, and compare words. A child may hear the first sound in cat easily but need more time to notice the final /t/. The best approach is brief spoken practice before adding letters on a page.
This lesson uses familiar words, clear mouth movements, and a free ending-sounds worksheet for kindergarten.
What Is an Ending Sound?
An ending sound is the sound heard at the end of a spoken word. Stretch sun slowly: sss-uuu-nnn. The last sound is /n/. Focus on sound first and then connect it to a letter or letter pair. Some endings, such as /sh/ in fish, use two letters.
How to Teach Final Sounds
Choose three familiar objects or pictures. Say each name slowly and ask the child to repeat it. Hold the last sound for a moment when possible. Ask, “What sound did your mouth make last?” Use a mirror so the child can watch the lips and tongue. Tap once for the beginning, once for the middle, and once for the end.
Children who need more support can review alphabet recognition practice before matching sounds to letters.
Free Ending Sounds Kindergarten Worksheet
Page one asks children to say eight simple words and circle the final sound. Page two asks them to find a word with the same ending sound.

Print the A4 pages at 100%. Complete the first two examples together. If a child guesses from the letters, cover the choices, say the word, and listen first.
Five-Minute Practice Ideas
- Play “I spy something that ends with /p/.”
- Sort picture cards into two final-sound groups.
- Say two words and ask whether their last sounds match.
- Build a word family such as cat, hat, and mat.
When the child is ready to read words in context, continue with the CVC short A sentence worksheets.
